Presently, he is serving as the President of Liberia since 2018. Before becoming the President, the politician was serving as the Senator of Montserrado County.
The ex-footballer whose full name is George Tawlon Manneh Oppong Ousman Weah, was born in Clara Town, the district of Monrovia on October 1, 1966.
His father was a mechanic and his mother was a seller, although they separated when George was still very young. The politician has 3 siblings. To keep alive his grandmother religious’ tutelage, Weah reconverted to Christianity following her death in 1994 and he is a devout Christian.
He completed his schooling from Muslim Congress School and went to Wells Hairston High School. However, as per reports, he dropped out of his school during his final year of studies.
George started playing football when he was 15 years old. He started playing for a youth club called Young Survivors.
During his career as an Professional footballer, he mostly played as the striker. He is quite well known for his unmatched ability to time runs behind the defense. He is also famous for his calm demeanor in front of the goal.
If we talk about his International career, the former player had made his debut in 1986 for the National team of Liberia. For the team, he played approximately 75 games while scoring 18 goals.
Apart from being the star player of the team, later in his career, he also coached the team and even went on to fund a larger extent to his national side.
However, despite doing so much effort, the Liberia team didn’t qualify for a single FIFA World Cup including the 2002 tournament where their team fell behind by just a point.
Though the politician helped the nation’s team in qualifying for the African Cup of Nations on 2 occasions. George represented his nation in 1996 and 2002 tournaments. Weah represented Liberia at international level, winning 75 caps and scoring 18 goals for his country.
He quit playing back in 2003. Apart from being an athlete, he also worked as a switchboard technician for a Telecommunications Corporation in Liberia.
As for his career as an Politician, after the 2nd Liberian Civil War ended, Weah announced his intention for running for the President of Liberia back in 2005’s elections.
The current President of Liberia is also known as the first African former professional footballer who became the Head of the State with his net worth at $90 million.
