Her achievement marks a milestone in the 56-year history of the CISF and also symbolizes the grit and determination of Indian women in uniform.
Geeta Samota bio and age
Geeta Samota is an Indian CISF personnel who was born in Chak village in Sikar district, Rajasthan. She is currently 35 years old and initially pursued hockey but redirected her passion towards mountaineering following a sports injury. Geeta was notably poised on forging a new path and trained extensively, taking on adventure sports despite the CISF lacking a dedicated mountaineering unit.
Military career
Geeta Samota started out her military career with the CISF back in 2011. Samota currently serves as a Sub Inspector and she is posted at the Udaipur airport unit.
CISF started the process of preparing her for mountaineering in 2015 and after this, in 2017, she became the first CISF officer to complete mountaineering training from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Training Institute (ITBP Training Center).
In the Rupshu area of Ladakh, Geeta climbed three peaks above 6,000 meters and two peaks above 5,000 meters in just three days and she has been honoured with the ‘Giving Wings to Dreams Award 2023’ by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the ‘International Women’s Day 2023 Award’ by the Delhi Women’s Commission.
Past expeditions
Over the years, Geeta Samota has taken part in various expeditions, and she became the first woman from any Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) to conquer both Mount Satopanth (7,075 meters) in Uttarakhand and Mount Lobuche (6,119 meters) in Nepal back in 2019.
She initially made her first attempt to climb Everest back in early 2021 with a CAPF expedition. However, it was cancelled due to technical issues, but she remained undeterred. Instead of backing down, she shifted her focus to completing the Seven Summits Challenge. The Seven Summits Challenge is a challenge that involves climbing the highest peak on every continent. Between 2021 and 2022, Geeta has successfully summited the following mountains:
- Mount Kosciuszko (2,228 m), Australia
- Mount Elbrus (5,642 m), Russia
- Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 m), Tanzania
- Mount Aconcagua (6,961 m), Argentina
Geeta Samota completed the feat in just six months and 27 days, setting a new record as the fastest Indian woman to achieve the feat. Geeta Samota also scaled five peaks in Ladakh’s Rupshu region in a span of just three days. Three of those peaks were above 6,000 meters and two were over 5,000 meters.
