The Indian Army’s Fire and Fury Corps has sent its condolences to the family of Agniveer Akshay Laxman in memory of the supreme sacrifice he made while performing his duty in the treacherous Siachen region.

Agniveer, also known as Operator Gawate Akshay Laxman, a native of the Buldana taluk’s Pimpalgaon Sarai hamlet, passed away at a glacier in Siachen. He had only been in the service for nine months. However, on October 20, at around 11:30 PM, he suffered a heart attack and died while at his job due to the harsh weather conditions. His death rites will be performed in his village of Pimpalgaon Sarai in the Maharashtra district of Buldana. The family of Agniveer Laxman, which consists of his parents and a younger sister, is survived by him.

As per government sources, the next of kin of an Agniveer, laying down his life in the line of duty, will receive ₹ 48 lakh as non-contributory insurance, ₹ 44 lakh as compensation, 30 per cent of Seva Nidhi contributed by the Agniveer with equal matching contribution by the government, and interest thereon and the emoluments, which would be received by Agniveers’ kin, also include pay for the balance tenure from the date of death, till completion of four years (over ₹ 13 lakh); as per balance residual tenure, and contribution of ₹ 8 Lakh from Armed Forces Battle Casualty Fund. Akshay’s DOB isn’t known but he died at a young age in his early 20s.

The Indian Army honours the sacrifice

“Quartered in snow silent to remain, when the bugle calls, they shall rise and march again. All ranks of the Fire and Fury Corps salute the supreme sacrifice of Agniveer (Operator) Gawate Akshay Laxman, in the line of duty, in the unforgiving heights of Siachen, and offer deepest condolences to the family,” the Fire and Fury Corps, Indian Army, posted on X (formerly Twitter).

This heroic soldier’s unflinching commitment and courage in the hostile Siachen region will be remembered for centuries to come. The Corps pays respect to his record of bravery and dedication to protecting the nation by extending its heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family.

Recently, an Agniveer committed suicide in Jammu and Kashmir.

Agniveer Amritpal Singh, a resident of Mansa, Punjab, died recently while on duty in Jammu and Kashmir. He committed suicide, but opposition parties expressed alarm because the Military Guard of Honor was not present for his funeral ceremonies. In response, the Army stated that Amritpal died tragically as a consequence of a gunshot fired from a service weapon and that a Guard of Honor was not provided in accordance with current procedure.
