Who is Gauri Sawant?

Gauri Sawant is a well-known Indian transgender activist. She has been in the news because the movie based on her story, starring Sushmita Sena, was released on JioCinema.

Her birth name was Ganesh. She was born in Pune, Maharashtra, on 22 July 1980. Subsequently, she changed her name and became well-known in Mumbai and around the nation as Shreegauri Sawant. She was raised by her grandmother after her mother died when she was 7, while her father, Suresh Sawant, was a police officer. Reportedly, she also has one older sister.

To avoid her father feeling disappointed, she left home at the age of 14 or 15. Gauri Sawant adopted a girl named Gayatri in 2008, when she was four years old.

Gauri said in an interview that her biological mother, a s*x worker had died from AIDS, leaving her alone, to be sold in the s*x-trafficking industry.

Her career

Gauri established the Sakhi Char Chowghi Trust in 2000 to support transgender counseling and safe sex. She created history in 2014 when she petitioned India’s Supreme Court for the first transgender adoption rights. While her education details are not known, she did her schooling in Pune.

She was a pivotal player in the NALSA lawsuit and helped establish transgender people’s legal status as the third gender. Notwithstanding her legal accomplishments, Gauri’s journey with an adopted daughter was highlighted in a moving 2017 Vicks commercial as part of their “Touch of Care” campaign.
