This Friday morning an operation led by DSP Deepak Singh unfolded in the Kotwali area of Sultanpur district by marking the culmination of a relentless pursuit to bring one of the state’s top 61 mafias Vinod Upadhyay to justice.

Vinod Upadhyay, a resident of Mayabazar in Ayodhya district had gained notoriety for his involvement in a multitude of criminal activities. With dozens of cases registered against him, Upadhyay had become a symbol of the challenges faced by law enforcement in Uttar Pradesh’s ongoing battle against organized crime.
The Gorakhpur Police had placed a reward of Rs 1 lakh on big mafia Vinod Kumar Upadhyay. Vinod Upadhyay had also contested the assembly elections in 2007 on BSP ticket. Sharp shooter Vinod had formed his own organized gang and carried out many sensational murder incidents.
Vinod was slapped by Nepalese criminal Jeet Narayan Mishra while he was lodged in Gorakhpur jail in 2004 and after which, on August 7, 2005, Vinod took revenge of the slap by killing Jeet Narayan in Sant Kabir Nagar. Jeet Narayan’s brother-in-law Gorelal was also killed in this incident and apart from this, Vinod was also accused of kidnapping and beating Hindu Yuva Vahini leader Sushil Singh in Gorakhpur. He openly indulged in hooliganism to get contracts from Railways and FCI.
Vinod Upadhyay, son of Ramkumar Upadhyay, resident of Mayabazar police station Maharajganj Ayodhya, had sustained injuries in an encounter with Uttar Pradesh Police’s Special Task Force in Sultanpur district on Friday morning and he also has a brother named Sanjay.

The STF’s efforts bore fruit as they engaged Upadhyay in an encounter, resulting in injuries to the mafia don. Rushed to the hospital, Vinod Upadhyay was declared dead upon arrival. The encounter not only marked the end of an era for the infamous criminal but also underscored the dangers posed by individuals of his caliber.
Vinod Upadhyay’s criminal empire extended far and wide, making his elimination a significant success for the law enforcement agencies. His involvement in the big mafia of Uttar Pradesh had earned him a reward of Rs 1 lakh.
The STF operation not only neutralized a major threat but also sent a strong message about the state’s commitment to eradicating organized crime.
DSP Deepak Singh’s leadership during the encounter demonstrated the strategic prowess of the law enforcement in tackling high-profile criminals. The recovery of a 30 bore Chinese company-made pistol, a 9 mm factory-made Sten gun and a cache of live and empty cartridges further exposed the arsenal at Upadhyay’s disposal.
The police also seized the mafia’s Swift car by adding another layer to the extensive criminal network that has now been disrupted.
