Instead of being at practice, the app indicated that he was idling near a local park. Acting on her suspicion, the mother drove to the location in Mecklenburg and allegedly found her son in a compromising situation with 26-year-old South Mecklenburg High School teacher Gabriela Cartaya-Neufeld.

Shocked, the mother took several pictures of the educator’s vehicle and license plate and subsequently called the police. And later, Cartaya-Neufeld was taken into police custody.

Prior to the incident, the parent had reportedly heard rumors about her son’s inappropriate relationship, leading her to be on high alert.

Rumors of the illicit union had circulated at the school for months, prompting administrators to question both the teen and the teacher during Cartaya-Neufeld’s arraignment.

Prosecutors stated that the science teacher, identified as Gabriela Cartaya-Neufeld engaged in intimate activities with the teen in her car, inside the teen’s mother’s home, and at her own residence.

Charges

For those curious, Gabriela Cartaya-Neufeld is facing five counts of felony s*xual activity with a student by a teacher. Although initially taken to the Mecklenburg County jail, she has since made bail. Life 360, the tracking app used by the mother, has gained popularity among “helicopter” parents seeking to monitor their children.

With approximately 50 million active monthly users, the app notifies parents when the device holder is inside a speeding car or has left a predetermined area. However, critics have raised concerns about the app’s extensive presence and data collection practices.

Some human trafficking activists allege that the app is used to track victims, while teens and young adults have shared methods on platforms like Reddit to circumvent or disable it, citing privacy and autonomy concerns.
