Leon Marchand wins two golds in one night

French swimmer Leon Marchand had a triumphant night as he clinched two gold medals on Wednesday night. He won the gold medals in both the 200-meter butterfly and the 200 breaststroke in just two hours apart. To make things more impressive, he won both the events with Olympic record times.

He beat Hungary’s Kristof Milak in the 200m butterfly final, and just two hours later, he beat Australia’s Zac Stubblety-Cook in the 200m breaststroke while shattering his record. Following the win, Australia’s Zac Stubblety-Cook heaped praise on Leon Marchand, stating:

Leon is like an ultimate competitor. I left nothing out there so I can’t complain. Silver for me, to get back on the podium after Tokyo, I’m content with that. There is still definitely more. I’d like to get quicker than that.”

He further added:

It’s his moment. He’s hungry. He’s on the cusp of being one of the greatest swimmers. We’re just seeing the beginning.”

Leon Marchand bio and age

Leon Marchand is a French swimmer who was born on May 17, 2002 in Toulouse, France and currently 22-years-old. He was a member of the Arizona State Sun Devils swim team. During his time there, his teammates affectionately called him “the Baguette”. The youngster currently holds the world record in the long course 400 metre individual medley following his recent win.

The Frenchman also holds the current record in the long course 200 metre individual medley, as well as the 200-metre butterfly and 200-metre breaststroke. His performances have often drawn comparisons to Michael Phelps, and he notably managed to beat Phelp’s record at the 2023 world championships in Fukuoka. He broke the 15-year-old world record in the 400-meter individual medley.

He has a net worth of $2-3 million and is believed to be single and unmarried.

Leon Marchand was born to parents Xavier Marchand, and Celine Marchand who were both Olympic swimmers. His father Xavier, represented France at the Atlanta Games back in 1996 and during the Sydney Olympics in 2000. During the Atlanta 1996, Xavier finished 8th in the 200m individual medley while he finished 7th at Sydney 2000.

Meanwhile, his mother, Celine, competed across four events in Barcelona 1992. She notably finished in 14th in the 200m individual medley. Interestingly, Xavier’s brother, Christophe, also competed in the 1988 Olympics, finishing in 12th in the 1500m freestyle.
