John Motson, a renowned British football commentator who spent 50 years working for the BBC, passed away at the age of 77. Motson covered 29 FA Cup finals, 10 European Championships, and 10 World Cups before leaving BBC Sport in 2018. He created more than 2,000 games in all.

The family of John Motson released a statement saying, “It is with deep regret that we report that John Motson OBE died away softly in his sleep today (Thursday).”

From 1971 to 2018, Motson was most recognised for his work as a “Match Of The Day” pundit. He received an OBE from the Queen in 2001 as part of her birthday honours for his contributions to sports broadcasting. He began working for the Barnet Press and Sheffield Morning Telegraph as a correspondent. In 1968, he started working full-time for the BBC.

For the majority of the years between 1979 and 2008, Motson was well-known for his distinctive sheepskin jackets and encyclopaedic knowledge of sports. Moreover, he served as the BBC’s voice for major finals including the FA Cup, the European Championship, and the World Cup. Motson’s wife Anne and son Frederick are still alive.

Who is Frederick Motson?

John Motson and his wife Anne had a son named Frederick in 1986. In Hertfordshire, near the Barnet FC team that Motson backed, John and Anne resided. The pair wed in 1977, and they were married for 45 years.

Prior to attending The College of Law and the University of Westminster, Frederick completed his legal studies at the University of Buckingham. Since 2000, he has served as a legal lecturer at the Open University. He is the chief examiner for the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives as well as a Central Law trainer.
