On Tuesday at Wimbledon’s No. 2 Court, there was the first major upset of this year’s men’s draw. 

On his major debut, Argentine Francisco Comesana defeated world No. 6 Andrey Rublev in four sets to earn his first tour-level victory.

The twenty-three-year-old threw up his arms and grinned widely after winning and why not, it was a special day for him. Comesana’s encounter against Rublev on Tuesday was only his fourth Tour match overall and his first on grass.

Francisco Comesana is an Argentine tennis player who was born on October 6, 2000, in Mar del Plata, Argentina. The 23-year-old stands 1.78 m (5 ft 10 in) tall. He is a right-handed (two-handed backhand) player. 

A look at Francisco Comesana’s career 

Located 400 kilometres from Buenos Aires, Comesana’s story began 16 years ago in the coastal city of Mar del Plata, Argentina. He used to play alot of football. The youngster was so much in love with the sport that it was in his daily schedule.

However, one day, things changed, for good. Comesana was on his way to the nearby concrete football field when he was asked by a friend with a tennis racket. 

The seven-year-old was not convinced tho, however he agreed to give tennis a try, and that was the end of it. As soon as he tried, the player didn’t go back to not playing it again and here he is today.

The Argentine has revealed that he watched fellow citizens Juan Martin del Potro and David Nalbandian compete on television. The rising star used to get his training at the Edison Lawn Tennis Club in his city. 

Comesana started competing in ITF Futures events in 2017. He didn’t play on clay until 2020 when he won on a hard court for the first time at that caliber. His first ATP Challenger Tour victory was earned in 2022 after he relocated to Cordoba in 2021.

Comesana’s career-high rating of No. 87 in the PIF ATP Rankings was attained in May of this year. Four more clay-court Challenger Tour triumphs followed.
