Renee Slegers was raised in Someren-Eind and started playing football with the local team, SSE, before spending 2006–2007 with Arsenal’s junior team. She moved to Sweden to play for Djurgårdens IF and Linköpings FC after returning to the Netherlands and starting her senior career with Willem II.
She participated in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2013 and earned 55 caps for the Netherlands during her playing career. However, injuries, particularly a major knee injury in 2016 and a pelvic injury in 2016, caused her to retire in 2018 at the age of 29. She became resilient as a result of these disappointments, and she began coaching before many of her contemporaries did.
Slegers made the switch to coaching quickly. She started in 2018 with the under-19 squad of IF Limhamn Bunkeflo before taking over as head coach of FC Rosengård, where she won two straight Damallsvenskan championships in 2021 and 2022.
Renee Slegers was a youth player in Arsenal’s academy when they last won the Champions League in 2007…
18 years later, she becomes a European champion again while being the manager of Arsenal.
She celebrated the victory by lifting the trophy with her son.
