Scharer is regarded as one of the most well-known referees in Europe these days after officiating multiple Champions League and Europa League games this season in addition to the 2023 UEFA Super Cup final between Real Madrid and Atalanta.

Sandro Scharer advanced swiftly up the ranks after finishing his referee training in 2005, and by 2011, at the age of 23, he was judging games in Switzerland’s second-highest level, the Challenge level. In a game between FC Lausanne-Sport and FC Thun in 2013, he made his Super League debut. His selection to officiate the 2019–20 Swiss Cup final between FC Basel and Young Boys Bern was a high point in his national refereeing career.
In a competition to qualify for the 2015 U-17 European Football Championship, he made his debut for his country. He officiated IF Elfsborg vs. FC Lahti in the Europa League’s first qualifying round that same year, marking his first senior-level international outing.
In May 2017, Scharer officiated his first senior international game, which was a friendly between San Marino and Italy. Since then, he has frequently overseen games in the Champions League qualifying rounds and the Europa League group stages.
His selection as one of 12 referees for the 2021 European Under-21 Football Championship group stage marked another significant turning point in his international career.
