Fans and the world press have their targets currently set on Ivan Barton who is accused of officiating in Mexico’s favor for them to qualify for the Copa America besides continuing in the Nations League.
Ivan Barton makes controversial decision in Mexico vs Honduras match
Just yesterday, on November 22, 2023, during the Mexico vs Honduras match in the CONCACAF Nations League, Ivan Barton made some very controversial decisions in favor of Mexico sparking outrage among fans. The match was the second leg of the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals between the two teams. At the end of the second half, Mexico was virtually out of the league and qualification for the Copa America. However, Ivan decided to add in 11 minutes of stoppage time.
As a result, a weary Honduras side could not hold on and eventually gave up a goal in the 10th minute of extra time. As the team survived to reach penalty kicks, Barton made further controversial decisions in favor of Mexico. During the spot kicks, Mexico’s César Huerta missed his penalty kick attempt not just once but twice, as Barton gave him three attempts before he scored on his third attempt. The Salvadoran referee stated that Honduras keeper Edrick Menjívar stepped off his line in the previous two attempts. The penalty shootout ended with Mexico advancing on a score of 4-2.
Ivan Barton history of controversial decisions
Prior to his recent scandal, Barton has previously been involved in other controversies as well. Back in a Panama vs Mexico Concacaf World Cup qualifier match for Qatar 2022, Barton was accused of favoring Mexico. Meanwhile, during a Leagues Cup, Barton received a lot of criticism for not showing Lionel Messi a yellow card. It was during an Inter Miami vs Orlando City match, when Messi clearly got in the face of his opponents. However, Barton simply overlooked it and even went on to issue a debatable penalty kick in favor of Inter Miami in the later parts of the game.
