The college’s new principal Firoz Kumar Padhi came out and assured the public that the college would soon announce fresh admission dates. Authorities have also called an emergency high-level meeting at Lok Seva Bhavan in Bhubaneswar, while several key officials, like the Deputy Chief Ministers, the Revenue Minister, and senior department secretaries, gathered to evaluate safety protocols and institutional accountability measures. Odisha CM Mohan Majhi even sanctioned a ₹20 lakh compensation aid to Soumyashree’s family.
Soumyashree, who had been undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar after allegedly setting herself ablaze on campus in protest against s*xual harassment by Assistant Professor and HoD of Education at FM College, Balasore, Odisha Samir Kumar Sahu, breathed her last late Monday night after being admitted on 12 June.

Soumyashree Bisi came from a humble, middle-class family in Odisha, with her sudden death devastating her loved ones. She was a young woman in her early college years and was a second year integrated B.Ed student. Bisi’s untimely death cut short her personal dreams and also left a lasting impact on her peers and educators.
Assistant professor Samir Kumar Sahu heading the education department in Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore district was arrested after Soumyashree’s self immolation while college principal Dilip Ghosh was suspended. Samir had harassed age 20 Soumyashree and had asked her for s*xual favours to clear her backlogs after which she set herself on fire before passing away of her burns in AIIMs on 14 Hune, 2025.

Earlier, reports surfaced online revealing that the authorities of Balasore found the body of a college student, who allegedly set herself ablaze after an alleged s*xual harassment by a professor. On Tuesday, the dead body of the victim was transferred to her village where the funeral took place.

As per reports, the victim’s dead body was cremated today in the presence of her family members and villagers. As per clips going viral across social media platforms such as X/Twitter and Instagram, thousands of people thronged the crematorium ground to attend her cremation.
To maintain order, the MP of Balasore, Pratap Sarangi and other district officials walked to the crematorium ground to attend her cremation from her house.

What Did Other Students Say?
As per counts given by the 20-year-old B.Ed., student she, accused the Head of the Education Department, Samira Kumar Sahu of s*xually harassing her. Allegedly the student set herself on fire in College Campus on Saturday over alleged inaction against the Professor.
As per official reports, her body was 95% burnt due to fire. The student was hurriedly admitted to the district hospital of Balasore, however, later she was shifted to IIM Bhubaneswar for further treatment.

The death of the student has sparked a widespread debate amongst not just netizens, but also politicians, with Opposition leaders from BJD, and Congress calling the incident as “institutional betrayal.”

As per media reports, the Chief Minister has announced strong action against culprit and in addition, a compensation of Rs. 20 Lakh for the family of the deceased.
Meanwhile, the Congress party announced Odisha band call for 17th July as they are intending to protest the failure of justice redressal system in the state.
Moreover, the former CM of the State urged the Governor Hari Babu to ensure that action should not b e taken against the institute authorities, but also against those who failed to take any action despite victim’s desperate pleas.

As per Odisha’s State Congress President, Bhakta Charan Das, the bandh is being supported by approximately 8 parties, including the Left. In his statement, Das said, “She brought petrol, and everyone watched silently. No one acted.”
Additionally, taking the jab at the state’ educational system, Rahul Gandhi took to X/Twitter and penned, “organised murder by the system.”
