Once a promising fitness blogger, 26 year old Ms Amma real name Beatriz Amma’s treatment to dissolve fat turned into a terrifying experience that left her fighting a flesh-eating sickness for years. Three years ago, when Amma was twenty-three, she went to an opulent spa in search of perfection and spent $800 (more than Rs 66,000) on a vitamin injection routine. These injections, a combination of “fast-dissolving” deoxycholic acid and vitamins B1 and C, were given to her 60 times in her stomach, back, and arms.

A few days following this treatment, Amma’s life descended into a terrifying nightmare. She revealed to Kennedy News that she had all those welts on her skin. They simply began to appear where it had been injected and her body began devouring itself from the inside out.

What is Mycobacterium abscessus?

Mycobacterium abscessus, a bacterial infection infamous for festering and producing excruciating skin sores, was the gloomy diagnosis. The doctors concluded that it was the consequence of injecting deoxycholic acid incorrectly. Previous studies have revealed a concerning link between subpar injections and comparable skin reactions, highlighting the risks that people, like Amma, unknowingly assume in the name of beauty.

Amma, a former swimsuit model, lost interest in her aim of being a fitness influencer and living a nomadic lifestyle. Three years later, after numerous surgeries to remove contaminated tissue, she is now required to receive intravenous antibiotics for six hours every day.

Anna’s memory of this horrible experience

The fact that everything in this story seemed perfectly real just serves to heighten its scary qualities. Amma was given those injections at a clean, well-maintained, and secure Los Angeles spa. She remembered a worker showing her the vials and telling her that they were made by a really reputable company.

The nightmare that ensued saw Amma confined to her bed and her body betraying her in a struggle for survival. She was unable to even put on clothes and needed assistance with using the restroom. She recalled that she was “rotting” in bed and that she required assistance changing and taking a shower.

Amma can still clearly recall the moment she believed the flesh-eating illness might claim her life. She never would have imagined that something so uncomplicated could nearly kill her and leave her struggling to survive.

Her physicians have advised her she is going to have this treatment forever, and she has to give up on her dreams of being an influencer. But Amma hasn’t allowed this experience to define who she is. She now focuses her efforts on promoting body positivity and increasing public awareness of this unattractive condition.
