US figure skating sensation Ilia Malinin put up a strong performance on the ice at Boston’s crowded TD Garden on Saturday to defend his world title.

Ilia Malinin merely confirmed what many already believed to be true that he is the world’s greatest figure skater. After finishing his campaign with a spectacular free skate that received a standing ovation from the crowd inside the arena, the 20-year-old easily won the title.

With six quadruple jumps to the song “I’m Not a Vampire” by Falling In Reverse, Malinin dazzled the audience. With a season-high 318.56 points, he ended his title defence more than 31 points ahead of second-place finisher Mikhail Shaidorov.

On December 2, 2004, Ilia Malinin was born in Fairfax, Virginia and is 5ft 9in tall. Tatiana Malinina (1999 Grand Prix Final, first Four Continents champion, ten-time national champion) and Roman Skorniakov (seven-time national champion), both Russian-born Olympic Uzbekistani singles skaters, are his parents.

Ilia’s parents, Tatyana Malinina and Roman Skorniakov, were Olympic figure skaters for Uzbekistan and his mother was the 1999 Grand Prix Final and Four Continents champion and she was also placed first in the NHK Trophy, Four Continents, and the Asian Games.

Roman represented his country at the Winter Olympics and achieved top 20 finishes in 1998 and 2002 and has won two silver medals at the Asian Championships and Asian Games in the nineties.

His ethnicity is American-Russian and he also has a younger sister, Liza, who was born in 2014 and competes as Elli Beatrice Malinina and is a figure skater following in her brother’s footsteps.

Ilia’s net worth stands between $500,000-1 million. Currently attending the George Mason University of Dance, Ilia enjoys skateboarding, playing video games and origami and graduated from the George C. Marshall High School.

 

Malinin’s favourite subject at George C. Marshall High School, from which he graduated in 2023, was physics. He is presently attending the George Mason University School of Dancing.

Ilya Malinin’s girlfriend Anna Stretenski is also Russian and her father was at the Olympics and worked with Tarasova. The two have been dating for over two years now.

Ilia Malinin’s parents in Reston, Virginia, started teaching him to skate when he was six years old in 2010. He frequently chose to play soccer as a child rather than exercise in a chilly stadium.

At the Philadelphia Summer International, Ilia Malinin made his junior international debut and won gold, defeating Australian Darian Kaptich and U.S. teammate Nicholas Hsieh. He finished fourth in the JGP United States and eighth at the JGP Italy in the 2019–20 ISU Junior Grand Prix.

Malinin would have participated in the 2020–21 ISU Junior Grand Prix, but it was cancelled because to the COVID-19 epidemic. After the Grand Prix series was changed to semi-domestic competitions, he was instead invited to 2020 Skate America.

After a season of struggles in the short program, Malinin, who was the gold medal favourite going into the 2023 U.S. Championships, put on a flawless performance to lead the segment by 10.11 points over Jason Brown. Malinin made his season-opening international debut at the 2023 CS Autumn Classic International, where he won gold. Malinin’s season began at the Lombardia Trophy in 2024.

In his first competition of the season, he broke the 100-point mark with a clean short program. Malinin participated in Legacy on Ice, an ice show hosted by U.S. Figure Skating on March 2, 2025, which honoured the people who died on American Eagle Flight 5342.
