Stanley Bowles was an English football player who was born on December 24, 1948 in Collyhurst, England and the 75 year old was renowned for his forwarding abilities during his playing career. He also earned a reputation as one of the great mavericks and nonconformists in the history of the sport.

A look at Stan Bowles’ career

Before moving on to Crewe in the fourth division and eventually Carlisle, Bowles began his professional career as an apprentice at Manchester City. Following his 1972 signing with QPR, Bowles spent the next seven seasons playing in the league and scoring 97 goals.

He played on the 1975–76 First Division team captained by Dave Sexton that came in second to Liverpool. In 1979, Bowles transferred under Brian Clough to Nottingham Forest.

He has played for clubs like Manchester City, Bury, Crewe Alexandra, Carlisle United, Queens Park Rangers, Nottingham Forest, Leyton Orient and Brentford (in that order).

After making just 46 appearances across all competitions, Bowles was later moved to Leyton Orient for £100,000. The following year, he moved to Brentford, where he stayed until the end of the 1982–83 campaign. In the 1983–84 season, Bowles came out of retirement to play a brief, non-contract return for the team before retiring once more in February 1984.

He played for Epping Town at the non-league level after quitting the professional game. Additionally, he managed to land a position as a pundit on Sky Sports, taking Rodney Marsh’s place. Bowles also held the position of lifelong chairman for the L.S.A. (Loyal Supporters Association), an organisation of Queens Park Rangers supporters.

Taking about his international side, Bowles only managed five caps for England despite having apparent talent; his only goal came against Wales at Ninian Park in 1974.
