The ED recently raided the senior TMC leader’s residence in connection with the alleged irregularities in civic body recruitments.
Tapas Roy resigns as TMC MLA
Veteran TMA MLA Tapas Roy resigned from all positions on Monday. While officially announcing his resignation, he stated:
I have submitted my resignation as an MLA to the assembly speaker. I am now a free bird.”
Following his announcement, several senior TMC leaders, like Kunal Ghosh and Bratya Basu met Roy at his residence to pacify him but failed to convince him.

Tapas Roy is a veteran Indian politician who was born on July 4, 1956. He previously served as the Minister of State for Planning and Statistics in West Bengal, India. He was a politician under the Trinamool Congress (TMC) party. Roy obtained his education from Surendranath College.

Career
Tapas Roy first got elected as MLA on a Congress ticket back in 1996 from the Vidyasagar Assembly constituency. He later won the 2001 Assembly elections on a TMC ticket from Bara Bazar. Throughout his career, he was elected as a legislator of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in 2001, 2011, 2016, and 2021.
Around 2011, Roy moved to the Baranagar Assembly constituency in the North 24 Paraganas district. He has since been a TMC legislator from the seat. Roy was also serving as the deputy chief whip of the TMC in the current Assembly prior to his resignation.
Reason behind Tapas Roy’s resignation
According to Tapas Roy, the reason behind his resignation was that he was fed up with the numerous corruption allegations against the party and the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government. He stated:
I am really disappointed with the way the party is functioning. I am fed up with so many allegations of corruption levelled against the party and the government. Secondly, I do not support the way the Sandeshkhali issue was handled.”
Moreover, he also slammed the TMC leadership for failing to stand by him when the ED raided his residence in BB Ganguly Street, central Kolkata, back in January. He stated:
I have been a loyal soldier of the party for the last 25 years. But I did not get my due.”
According to reports, Roy is also at loggerheads with TMC MP from North Kolkata, Sudip Bandopadhyay.
