His retirement was formally notified through a letter dated August 7. Needless to say, it was extensively reported in the media on Wednesday because he had been suspended for more than three years as a result of multiple incidents of severe misconduct and misbehavior.
Taking to social media on Thursday, Basant Rath proudly shared a welcome message from the BJP, showcasing his digital joining of the party. Sunil Sethi, the chief spokesman for the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir, responded in a calm but direct manner.
He highlighted that anybody may join the BJP online, but that an individual’s position and duties inside the party are ultimately decided by the party leadership. He continued that the BJP places a high importance on discipline, underscoring the fact that Rath’s premature retirement was due to indiscipline.

Who is Basant Rath?
Basant Rath is a renowned former Indian IPS officer and author. He has been in the news because he recently joined the BJP after getting prematurely retired.
He was born in 1972 in Pipli’s Uttarkashi village, Puri district, Odisha, and is currently living in Jammu and Kashmir.
After completing his elementary schooling, he attended Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi, where he did his graduation and post-graduation. His father’s name is Hrushikesh, and he was a priest and farmer.
He is currently 50 years old. While he is married, his wife’s and chidren’s names are not known.
His career
Basant Rath joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 2000 and was first assigned to Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, in 2002 before being transferred to Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir.
However, the Central Government has decided to prematurely retire him from service under Rule 16(3) of the AIS (DCRB) Rules, 1958, with immediate effect due to his ongoing lack of discipline.
