Sairaj Bahutule bio

Sairaj Bahutule is a former Indian cricketer who was born on January 6, 1973, in Mumbai. During his time as a player, he was an allrounder who specialized in leg spin bowling. He mainly played domestic cricket for Mumbai and later on with Satara. Sairaj is currently 51 years old and serves as a bowling coach at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), in Bengaluru.

He is married and has children as well but the names of his family members aren’t known.

Bahutule’s father, Vasant, was also a cricketer and as a batsman, he played two matches for Maharashtra in 1953. He had kept wickets for Maharashtra in both the matches.

In July 1990, Bahutule and his two friends were involved in a car accident on Marine Drive, Mumbai and Vivek Singh, the son of noted singers Jagjit and Chitra, passed away in that unfortunate incident. Bahutule plunged into a coma and his right femur was fractured and the elbow was also injured.

Sairaj Bahutule set to become next Team India bowling coach

Former India leg-spinner Sairaj Bahutule is all set to travel to Sri Lanka alongside Team India as their new bowling coach for the upcoming six-match white-ball series. India are set to play three T20Is and three ODIs against Sri Lanka from July 27 to August 7. Notably, the upcoming tour will serve as the first assignment for new Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Playing career and stats

The 51-year-old was an all-round bowler who represented both India and Mumbai. Throughout his career, Bahutule played just two Tests and eight ODIs for India. During those matches, he claimed three wickets in Test matches at an average of 67.66. He also claimed two in ODIs, averaging at 141.50.

As a batter, Bahutule scored 21* in his debut Test match against Australia, back in Chennai in 2001. Despite not achieving the same success on the international stage, Bahutule proved an absolute legend in domestic cricket. He played a total of 188 first-class matches and claimed over 630 wickets at an average of 26. Meanwhile, as a batsman, he scored 6,176 runs at an average of 31.83, with nine hundreds and 26 fifties. Aside from his batting stats, Bahutule also managed to take 197 wickets and scored 1367 runs across 143 List-A games.

Following his retirement, Sairaj Bahutule currently serves as the bowling coach at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. He has also previously worked as the spin bowling coach for the Rajasthan Royals (RR), and the Bengal, Gujarat, Vidarbha, and Kerala domestic teams.
