In a notable act, the BCCI decided on Sunday to donate Rs one crore to former India coach Anshuman Gaekwad ‘s medical care at a London hospital while he fights blood cancer.

Following heartfelt pleas for assistance from former captain Kapil Dev and Sandip Patil, who urged the cricket body to assist Anshuman Gaekwad, the BCCI made its decision.

“Mr. Jay Shah has instructed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to release Rs 1 crore with immediate effect to provide financial assistance to India’s veteran cricketer Mr Anshuman Gaekwad, who is battling cancer,” BCCI apex council said in a statement.

71-year-old Anshuman Gaekwad was born on September 23, 1952. He is 5ft 11in tall. Anshuman Gaekwad, comes from a Gujarati family with a long history in the game. Datta Gaekwad, his father, was an Indian Test cricket player as well. His mother Ushadevi hailed from a Marathi background. He has 3 younger siblings namely Sunetra, Geeta, Nandini.

Anshuman is married to Jyoti Gaekwad and has two sons namely Aniruddha Gaekwad and Shatrunjay Gaekwad. He attended the Maharaja Sayajirao University and holds a degree in commerce.

Anshuman Gaekwad career

Anshuman Dattajirao Gaekwad is a former cricket player from India who has also served as the national cricket coach twice. Datta Gaekwad, his father, represented India in Test cricket as well. In the 2000 ICC Champions Trophy, he was the coach of the team that placed second.

Known for his defensive approach to fast bowling, Gaekwad prioritized defence when West Indian pace bowlers dominated the globe of cricket. He went by The Great Wall for short. On December 27, 1974, he played his first Test match against the West Indies in Kolkata. On December 27, 1984, he played his final Test match against England in Kolkata.

Gaekwad, a right-handed batsman, amassed 1985 runs from 40 Test matches at an average of 30.07, including two hundreds and ten half-centuries. In Jalandhar in 1982โ€“1983, he achieved his greatest Test score of 201. His 671-minute inning serves as an example of his concentration and patient pitching technique.

Anshuman Gaekwad took an early retirement from cricket in 2000 and went on to work for GSFC (Vadodara). At present, Anshuman is residing in Vadodara, Gujarat with his family. In June 2018, the C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award was given to him.

While his net worth isn’t known, he is believed to be in a tight spot financially and has appealed for money for his treatment with the BCCI releasing Rs.1 crore for him.
