Journalist Evan Gershkovich of the Wall Street Journal has been detained by Russian authorities on suspicion of espionage.

The news has been shared by the Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB), which stated that Gershkovich, a US citizen born in 1991 and accredited at the Russian Foreign Ministry, engaged in illegal activities and is suspected of spying for the US government.

The FSB alleged that when he was detained in Yekaterinburg, which is situated on the eastern side of the Ural Mountains, he was seeking to gather sensitive information pertaining to a Russian military-industrial complex firm. If found guilty, he may spend up to 20 years in jail.

Who is Evan Gershkovich?

Evan Gershkovich is an American journalist. He has been in the news because he was recently detained by Russian authorities on suspicion of espionage.

He was born in New York City in 1991. His parents are Russian Jews who emigrated from the former Soviet Union to the US in 1979. He was brought up in Princeton, New Jersey. For the last six years, he has lived in Russia.

Evan Gershkovich did his schooling at Princeton High School. Later, he attended Bowdoin College, where he majored in philosophy and English.

Presently, he is 31 or 32 years old.

His career

Evan Gershkovich formerly worked for Agence France Presse and The Moscow Times before beginning his career at The Wall Street Journal in January 2022.

He was being detained while working for The Wall Street Journal’s Moscow office and covering the continuing situation in Ukraine. When he was taken into custody in Yekaterinburg, he was specifically reporting on the actions of Wagner, a Russian military contractor.
