Ernie Schicchi is a co-owner of Alternative Pest Control in Brooklyn. He has been in the news because she recently became the new “Rat Czar” of New York City. With Schicchi’s appointment, the Mayor’s Office’s hunt for a skilled rat killer for the city came to a conclusion.
He is from Freehold, New Jersey. She is currently 50 years old. He has 27 years of experience in pest management and has spent 15 of those years just dealing with rodents and will be paid a salary in between $120,000-$170,000 in her new role.
Ernie Schicchi told the New York Post that rats are highly smart, very resourceful, and they learn very rapidly due to the overpopulation of rodents. He further claims that the city is becoming increasingly overrun by rats because of the unusual outbreak. He added,
When COVID hit and restaurants closed, garbage stopped being set out and rats lost food sources. So they fed off of garbage in residential neighborhoods. Now that restaurants are open again, they [eat] from both.
According to the New York Post, the rat czar shared some of the understandings she came to regarding the growth of the rodent population. According to him, rats can travel in places where humans often cannot because “they are not claustrophobic.”
In reference to fixes, he explains,
I cover those holes with what’s called Geomesh. It’s a metal fiber that gets laid down like carpeting and is covered with dirt or grass. It prevents rats from getting in and out of their burrows.
