As Erika’s family, friends, and the Troy community grieve her sudden departure, online tributes have emerged. Her sister, April Marie, confirmed the heartbreaking news in a Facebook post on December 29 due to a cardiac arrest.
In her post, April Marie characterized her late sister as a unique individual who faced numerous challenges in her relatively short life. She expressed a hope that others would find ways to celebrate Erika and keep her memories alive.
She wrote “I hope you all can find ways to celebrate her and keep the memories of her alive.” April also mentioned the financial challenges the family faced in arranging Erika’s funeral and memorial services during the holiday season.

Erika’s Family
Erika is survived by her partner, Derek Matala, and their five children: Nathan J. Matala, Nina E. Matala, Grace L. Matala, Derek R. Matala Jr., and Dominick A. Matala.
According to her Facebook profile, Erika worked at Hewitt’s Garden Centers in Clifton Park, New York prior to her passing. The 31-year-old had previously held positions as a customer service manager at Walmart and later served as the Zone Merchandise Supervisor Front End Manager.
Erika attended Shenendehowa High School and is also survived by her mother, Wendy and her two sisters. Friends and family are grappling with the shock and sorrow of Erika’s sudden demise, as evidenced by numerous Facebook posts expressing grief and memories.
A childhood friend, Aimee Crounse, pledged to look after Erika’s children in her absence. Jo Lyn, a coworker, recalled their deep and meaningful conversations and expressed gratitude for the friendship they shared.
She penned “We told each other we loved each other every conversation. We had deep conversations that I am so thankful for & grateful for bc I know she left knowing how much I loved her, how much I supported her.
“It didn’t matter what she was doing, I told her that. Whatever she wanted to do. I am always going to be her friend! I will miss all of your Facebook silliness.”
Dolnesha Figueroa remembered Erika as “real and genuine,” while high school friend Billy Kelly reflected on the enjoyable moments they had together. Kelly wrote “I enjoyed those high school days with you. You’re a beautiful person.”
The funeral services for Erika Mushorn are scheduled for Friday, January 5, 2024, from 4 pm to 7 pm at Clifton Park’s Catricala Funeral Home.
