Emoni Bates brief bio

Emoni James-Wayne Bates is an American college basketball player who was born on 28 January 2004, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States. He was born to parents Elgin Bates and Edith Bates. Bates currently plays as a guard for the Eastern Michigan Eagles of the Mid-American Conference. Prior to joining them, Bates previously played for the Memphis Tigers.

Bates’ love for basketball began at the early age of 3. Bates recalls sleeping with a tiny basketball right next to him as a kid. His hardwork and love for the game eventually led him to have an outstanding career in the sport. And now, he is all ready to go professional and join the NBA in the upcoming draft.

Bates started out by playing basketball for the Lincoln High School and proved to be an exceptional scorer from the start. During his freshmen year, Bates helped his school lift their first regional title. Bates averaged 28.5 points in his freshman year, and also earned several accolades like Gatorade Player of the Year, MaxPreps Freshmen of the Year, and all-state honors. He was so good that many people started comparing him to a high school LeBron James.

In his Sophomore year, Bates earned won all of the same accolades yet again and even featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s November 2019 edition. The following year, Bates, who was now a junior transferred to Ypsi Prep Academy, a school that his father runs. He won the Naismith Prep Player of the Year that year. Interestingly, Bates was reclassified and decided to head straight into college following his junior year.

After an excellent high school journey, the former five-star recruit decided to join Memphis University. Bates played his first-year college for the Tigers but it didn’t work out well. Moreover, Bates injured himself and he eventually shifted to Eastern Michigan University the following year.

At Eastern Michigan, Bates averaged 19.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. Bates got in trouble in late 2022, after he was booked on gun charges, putting his basketball career to a standstill. After pleading guilty, his charges were eventually dropped and Bates made his debut in November against Michigan State.
