The 31-year-old defeated Kenya’s Irine Cheptai after a lengthy race-long struggle to win in a Commonwealth Games record time of 30 minutes 48.60 seconds and claim her maiden major victory.
With 250 meters remaining, Cheptai had a one-meter lead, but McColgan maintained her composure and attacked to get the upper hand. A counterattack never materialized, and the Scotswoman flung her hands in the air as she crossed the finish line.
