American professional basketball coach and former player Earl Joseph Watson Jr. currently works as an assistant coach for the San Diego Toreros.

Earl Joseph Watson Jr. was a four-year starter and an all-conference selection as a senior in the Pac-10 while playing collegiate basketball for the UCLA Bruins. The Seattle SuperSonics selected Watson with the 39th overall pick in the second round of the 2001 NBA draft.

45-year-old Earl Watson was born on June 12, 1979 to Earl Sr who is an African-American and Estella Watson a Mexican in Kansas City, USA. He is 6ft 2in tall. Earl Watson is a graduate from Kansas City, Kansas’ Washington High School. He averaged 23.4 points, 8.3 assists, and 14 rebounds per game during his final year of high school and played 4 years of college basketball at UCLA.

He played for Seattle from 2001 to 2002 and then for the Memphis Grizzlies from 2002 to 2005, for the Denver Nuggets from 2005 to 2006 and then went back to the Seattle SuperSonics / Oklahoma City Thunder from 2006 to 2009. He played for the Indiana Pacers from 2009 to 2010 and the Utah Jazz from 2010 to 2013 before finishing his career with the Portland Trail Blazers from 2013 to 2014 and in 2014 Watson became an assistant coach with the Austin Spurs of the NBA Developmental League.

In the 2001 NBA draft, Earl Watson was chosen by the SuperSonics in the second round (39th overall). Watson averaged 10.7 points and 6.8 assists with the Sonics during the 2007–08 NBA season.

In a game against the Sacramento Kings on February 6, 2008, Earl Watson recorded his first-ever triple-double. In 32 minutes, Watson scored 23 points, pulled down 10 rebounds, and dished out 10 assists. Ray Allen’s triple-double against the Los Angeles Lakers on January 28, 2004, was Seattle’s first since then.

Thunder waived Watson on July 17, 2009. On July 28, 2009, he agreed to a one-year contract with the Indiana Pacers.

On September 26, 2010, he signed a contract with the Utah Jazz. He signed a contract with the Portland Trail Blazers on July 10, 2013.

On May 12, 2014, Watson played his final NBA game in Game 4 of the Trailblazers vs. San Antonio Spurs Western Conference Semi-Finals. Watson played for just one and a half minutes in his final game and did not register any statistics.

The TrailBlazers prevailed 103-92, but it would be their only win of the series; San Antonio would defeat them in five games. On October 2, 2014, Watson announced his retirement.

He played 13 seasons in the NBA with seven teams before becoming a coach in 2014 and was the head coach of the Phoenix Suns from 2016 to 2017 and in 2021 he became an assistant coach for the Toronto Raptors.
