Dylan Butler, a 17 year old student at Perry High School, carried out the attack armed with two firearms and a makeshift explosive device. Reports from local media detailed the horrifying event which unfolded before the school’s opening bell when few students and faculty were present in the building. Butler turned the gun on himself and was reportedly killed by a gunshot before law enforcement could intervene.
A family member of Butler who is a biological male claimed the shooter had endured relentless bullying since elementary school, and described him as a quiet person. Sisters Yesenia Roeder and Khamya Hall, both 17, as well as their mother Alita told the Associated Press that Butler lost his cool after his younger sister began to get bullied too and they said that the school officials failed to help, which was “the last straw” for him.
He had plans to kill many more, however and his body was found with the not-yet-detonated improvised explosive device, which cops described as “pretty rudimentary.”
Sheriff Adam Infante revealed in a press conference that the motive behind Butler’s actions remains unclear. However, a chilling glimpse into his disturbed mindset emerged through a cryptic TikTok video posted just moments before the rampage. The now-deleted video depicted Butler in a school bathroom stall with a blue duffle bag at his feet, captioned ominously with “Now we wait.”

The video was set to the song “Stray Bullet” by the rock group KMFDM, featuring lyrics like “I’m your nightmare coming true, I am your worst enemy” and “Stray bullet, from the barrel of love.” The choice of this song adds an eerie layer to an already grim situation, providing insight into Butler’s mental state at the time of the attack.
Investigators also found other photos on Butler’s social media, showcasing him posing with firearms. These revelations raise questions about the signs that may have been overlooked leading up to the tragedy.
The small town campus is situated 40 miles northwest of Des Moines. The incident has not only left a lasting impact on the school community but has also drawn attention to the broader issue of school violence and the importance of recognizing warning signs.
One aspect that has come to light is the reported bullying Dylan Butler endured since elementary school. Sisters Yesenia Roeder and Khamya Hall, both 17, alongside their mother, Alita, spoke out about the relentless bullying Butler faced. His sister also became a target, prompting his parents to address the issue with the school. It remains unclear whether the school took appropriate action in response to the parents’ complaints about bullying.
