While attempting to cycle the Mediterranean route from Dundee to India, 38 year old Harper encountered difficulties. It was reported that he fell ill after consuming wild mushrooms he had foraged near Roquebrune-Cap-Martin.

Tragically, he is believed to have suffered a fatal fall from a cliff near Ventimiglia, a few miles from the French-Italian border. Concerns arose in December when Harper failed to maintain contact with family and friends for about a month.

Alarming text messages about his health prompted his older brother, Dale, 40, to travel to the south of France in November to investigate. Dale learned of Steven’s death in late December, discovering that his body had been kept in a local morgue in Sanremo.

On January 21, 2024, Dale shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook, expressing pride in Steven pursuing his passion but conveying deep sorrow at his loss.

Condolences from around the globe poured in, and the family, profoundly affected, received support from the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office.
