Doria Loyce Ragland was born on September 2, 1956, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Jeanette Arnold, a nurse, and Alvin Azell Ragland, an antiques dealer and her parents moved to Los Angeles when Ragland was a baby. Ragland has two older maternal half-siblings, Joseph, Saundra Johnson and a younger paternal half-brother, Alvin Joffrey Ragland.

The Ragland family descends from Richard Ragland who was born into slavery in Georgia in the early 1800s.

After graduating from Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, Ragland started working as a temporary makeup artist and completed her Bachelor’s in Psychology and earned a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Southern California.

After passing California’s licensing exam in 2015, she worked as a social worker for three years at the Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services clinic in Culver City and has worked as a travel agent, and a yoga instructor and has also owned a business. In 2020, she started teaching jewelry making at Santa Monica College and became the CEO and CFO of a care home firm in Beverly Hills.

Ragland married American television lighting director Thomas Markle Sr. in 1979. Her current net worth is at $9 million.
