Donovan Munger, a former defensive tackle for Ohio State who was a member of the Buckeyes from 2013 to 2015, has died, his mother revealed on Instagram on Thursday.

Donovan Munger was thirty years of age at the time of death but his cause of death is yet unknown. Munger, a four-star prospect from Shaker Heights, Ohio, appeared in 12 games as a reserve defensive tackle in 2015 and 11 games in 2014. He had to redshirt his actual rookie season after being diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism in his lungs, and blood clots ended his football career in 2016.

He was a four-star recruit in the 2013 class out of Shaker Heights High School in Cleveland and the former Ohio State DL was a member of the 2014 national championship team.

“My heart will never beat the same. It is with my deepest sadness that I formally announce to the world the passing of my eldest child Donovan Munger. Pray for my family,” Donovan Munger’s mother wrote.

“It’s tough. You put your whole life into playing this game of football and you love it so much and then it gets taken away from you. It’s a tough kind of thing to swallow, but I think he understands this is the best for him,” Larry Johnson said.

“He’ll still be a part of us, be a part of our unit and a guy that we can talk to, but I think now it gives us a chance to move on in his life and do a great job in the classroom,” he further added.

Donovan Munger career and education

Under previous head coach Urban Meyer, the former defensive end Donovan Munger played for Ohio State for two seasons. He was 6ft 4in tall and the 30 year old attended Shaker Heights High School in Ohio.

When the Buckeyes finished 14-1 in the 2014 season and won the national championship, he participated in 11 games. However, health issues plagued his time in college.

During his time with the Ohio State Buckeyes, Munger struggled with blood clots on multiple occasions. In 2013, he was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism in his lungs, forcing him to miss his rookie season. As a result of this circumstance, he quit playing football in 2016.

Larry Johnson was the defensive linemen coach when the DL had to hang up his cleats. In a statement, he wished Munger well in his future and expressed his belief that he might become a football coach.
