Who is Dominic Raab? The New Deputy Prime Minister

British politician Dominic Rennie Raab is now the Deputy Prime Minister, Secretary of State for Justice, and Lord Chancellor of the United Kingdom.

The 48-year-old Raab was born in Buckinghamshire on February 25, 1974 with his height at 5 feet 9 inches and net worth at $1.7 million. His parents are Peter Raab, the food manager at Marks & Spencer, and Jean Raab, a clothes buyer. When he was six years old, his father, a Jew, moved from Czechoslovakia to Britain. This was due to the Munich Agreement granted Nazi Germany control of the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia.

Raab was brought up in the Church of England, which was his English mother’s religion. He was raised in the community of Gerrards Cross in Buckinghamshire. Raab was 12 years old when his father passed away from cancer.

Prior to enrolling in Lady Margaret Hall Law School in Oxford, Raab attended Dr Challoner’s Grammar School in Amersham and worked as a volunteer on Kibbutz Sarid.

Dominic Raab’s Career

Raab won 32,134 votes and an 18,593-vote margin over his nearest challenger in the 2010 election to represent Esher and Walton, a then-safe Conservative seat in Surrey.

From 2019 to 2021, he served as the first secretary of state and foreign secretary. He was a member of the Conservative Party. In 2018, he was the Brexit secretary.

Raab attended Dr Challoner’s Grammar School after growing up in Buckinghamshire. Before transferring to Jesus College in Cambridge for his master’s, he started his legal studies at Lady Margaret Hall in Oxford. His career began as a lawyer at Linklaters before he went on to work at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and as a political assistant.

He served as the Under-Secretary of State for Civil Liberties and Human Rights in Parliament from 2015 to 2016.

Succession After Theresa May

After Theresa May was named prime minister, Raab went back to the opposition benches. Still, following the 2017 presidential election, he was selected to serve as Minister of State for Courts and Justice in the second May administration. During the 2018 cabinet reshuffle, he was elevated to the role of Minister of State for Housing and Planning.

Raab was named Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union in 2018 after David Davis’ resignation. Two weeks later, May named Raab to take over domestic planning while she handled the EU exit discussions. Raab was named as May’s replacement. Four months later, Raab resigned from his role as Brexit Secretary because of his disagreement with May’s suggested Brexit divorce agreement.

After May resigned in 2019, Raab ran to succeed her. However, he lost in the second round of voting among Conservative MPs. When Boris Johnson was named prime minister, Raab was named First Secretary of State and Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs.

After the Department for International Development and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office merged in 2020, Raab’s position was titled Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth and Development Affairs. In the 2021 cabinet reshuffle, he was elevated to the posts of Deputy Prime Minister, Secretary of State for Justice, and Lord Chancellor. He was given a new role in the Sunak ministry.

Raab is married to Erika Rey, a Brazilian marketing expert who worked for Google in 2020. They have two kids and live in Thames Ditton, Surrey.
