Dominic Purcell was born on 19 February 1970 in Wallasey, a town in Cheshire, England, to Phil Myrtvedt and Maureen Purcell. His mother was Irish, and his father had Norwegian and English ancestry. When he was two years old, his family moved to Bondi, a suburb in Sydney, Australia, and later to Western Sydney in Penrith.
He attended Blaxland High School and St Finbars primary school before going to St Dominic’s College. Later, he studied at the Australian Theatre for Young People and then enrolled at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. It was during this time that he met fellow actor Hugh Jackman, who was in the same class as him.
Purcell holds triple citizenship in Britain, Ireland, and Australia. He is British by virtue of being born in the UK before the country abolished unconditional birthright citizenship in 1983. He is also Irish automatically through his Irish mother.
