The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) claimed its first victory in assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday when its candidate Mehraj Malik defeated his nearest challenger from the BJP in Doda constituency by a margin of over 4,538 votes.
District Development Council (DDC) member Mehraj Malik received 23,228 votes as opposed to 18,690 for BJP candidate Gajay Singh Rana. Abdul Majid Wani, the head of the DPAP, received 10,027 votes, while National Conference leader and former minister Khalid Najib Suharwardy received 13,334 votes.

36-year-old Mehraj Malik was born in 1988 and is a Muslim by religion. He has been affiliated with the Aam Aadmi Party for a long time. Mehraj Malik has studied up to PG. Malik, a Doda District Development Council member, has frequently made headlines for organizing demonstrations against the local government.
The DDC election in 2021 was won by Malik. In the 2014 assembly elections, Mehraj Malik ran as an independent. Malik entered the spotlight following a packed public gathering on the final day of campaigning. AAP MP Sanjay Singh also attended this public gathering.

After protest against a land eviction drive in Jammu, Mehraj Malik was taken into detention for questioning. Malik was taken into custody by the authorities on the grounds that he gave a speech at the scene of a violent incident. He was granted bail and released on February 10, 2023.
Earlier in the year, Mehraj Malik ran unsuccessfully in the Lok Sabha elections from the Udhampur constituency.
Out of ninety assembly segments, the AAP which now holds power in Delhi and Punjab had seven candidates on the ballot. In September of last year, the party led by Arvind Kejriwal was granted national party recognition.
AAP has MLAs in the assemblies of Gujarat and Goa in addition to having governments in Delhi and Punjab.

Arvind Kejriwal, the former chief minister of Delhi and national convenor of the AAP, congratulated Mehraj Malik on winning the Doda seat.
“Many congratulations to Aam Aadmi Party candidate Mehraj Malik from Doda for winning a landslide victory by defeating BJP. You fought a very good election. Congratulations to the entire Aam Aadmi Party on becoming MLA in the fifth state,” Kejriwal wrote.
