Kwon hails from Seoul, South Korea. He completed his high school studies at the Daewon Foreign Language High School based in South Korea. He further received his BS in the subject of computer science in early 2015 at the University of Stanford. He has worked briefly being a software engineer for both Microsoft and Apple.

When he was asked if he had another passport, he said, ‘he was not too comfortable answering questions related to that or his travel plans.’
Kwon has co-founded Terraform Labs in 2018 with entrepreneur Daniel Shin. Later on, in 2018, Terraform Labs released a cryptocurrency called Luna and Terraform started selling stablecoin, TerraUSD (UST), in 2020. The value of the crypto Luna eventually reached more than $116 in April of 2022.
