One of the primary suspects named Dipankar Barman in a multi-crore online trading scam was apprehended by the Assam Police on Sunday, following weeks of manhunting.
A special Assam Police squad, working with the Goa Police, detained Dipankar Barman in Goa. Barman is suspected of defrauding thousands of investors out of around ₹7,000 crores in Assam and a few other states.

Dipankar Barman allegedly oversaw DB Stock Broking, which enticed investors with the promise of enormous returns in a short period of time by investing in the stock market. When he failed to refund the investments, he vanished in August.
Barman is charged with defrauding numerous investors in Hyderabad and Meghalaya in addition to Assam.
“Absconding accused Dipankar Barman of DB Stock scam has been arrested in Goa by a team from CGPD under leadership of Amit Mahato, IPS, ACP, Pan Bazar with the support of crime branch of Goa Police in connection with an ongoing investigation,” Guwahati Police posted on X.
In August of this year, a number of online trade scams were discovered in Assam, and they all seem to have functioned independently.

A number of cases were filed by the Assam Police in response to investor complaints. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is currently looking into 41 of these cases from the state, was eventually given all of these cases.
The CBI was tasked by the Assam government to investigate 41 cases that were filed in relation to the scam.
It has been reported that a number of companies, primarily run by twenty something men and women, gathered hundreds of crores of rupees from people around the state by promising them enormous returns on their stock market investments.
How Dipankar Barman got arrested?
According to the officer, Dipankar Barman rarely stayed at one hotel for more than three or four nights at a time and would regularly switch hotels. He was staying at a homestay in a secluded area when he was arrested.
A passport, some gold jewellery, and cash totalling more than ₹27 lakhs were recovered from Dipankar’s residence in Goa. Barman is accused of duping thousands of investors of around ₹7,000 crores in Assam but his net worth isn’t known.
Over 65 people, including those allegedly running similar scams were earlier arrested and were arrested Barman’s parents were also arrested in connection with the case.
Assamese actor Sumi Borah who Dipankar refered to as his sister and her photographer husband Tarkik Borah were among those arrested in the scam and Barman’s aide Monalisa Das his girlfriend and to be wife, also an actor, was earlier arrested.
Age 29 Dipankar Barman, the owner of DB Stock and a central figure in the high-profile DB Stock scam, was apprehended by Guwahati Police in Goa on Sunday. Barman was involved in extensive hawala transactions, with the first payment reportedly received on August 22, 2024.
The funds were funneled from Assam by Anjali Das, the sister of his girlfriend and would-be wife, Monalisa Das. Both Monalisa and Anjali are currently detained in the Guwahati Central Jail.
The Assam government had handed over the investigation in 41 cases registered in connection with the scam to the CBI.
A court in Pernem, Goa, heard Barman’s appearance on Monday and gave Assam Police a three-day transit remand to transport him to Guwahati. It is probable that he would arrive in Assam on Tuesday.
In August, after Barman vanished after obtaining an estimated ₹7,000 crores from investors, the entire scam which encompassed other individuals acting independently throughout Assam came to light by promising enormous returns on money spent in online stock trading.
