NYPD officer Didarul Islam shot dead in NYC shooting
Didarul Islam was a dedicated officer from the NYPD’s 47th Precinct in the Bronx, who was recently killed during a mass shooting at 345 Park Avenue. The tragic shooting took place at around 6:30 p.m. on July 28, killing at least four people. Authorities later identified the shooter as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, who arrived at the building in a black BMW, before exiting with a rifle.
Security footage of the area showed Tamura shooting Islam, who was in uniform, before continuing to fire at others inside the lobby. The shooter then killed three other victims before dying by suicide on the 33rd floor. According to the police, Islam gave his life while protecting others in the line of duty.
Tributes and condolences
Following the news about the tragic death, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch praised Islam for his courage and dedication, stating:
He bravely put himself in danger to protect others. He will be remembered as a true hero.”
Meanwhile, Mayor Eric Adams, who met Islam’s family the same evening, stated how Islam was “a man of strong faith” and “lived a good and honest life.” The NYPD also issued a statement, saying:
Officer Islam represented the very best of our department. His life was tragically cut short while performing the duty he was trusted with.”
