According to his LinkedIn profile, Dhaval Buch is a senior advisor at both Blackstone and Alvarez & Marsal and a non-executive director on Gildan’s Board. He graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) in 1984 with a degree in mechanical engineering. Buch held the position of executive director at Unilever, eventually becoming the Chief Procurement Officer.

These documents also indicate he was with Unilever during the alleged investment in Vinod Adani firms. Furthermore, the report claims that during Buch’s tenure as a senior advisor at Blackstone, the company backed Mindspace and Nexus Select Trust, which became India’s second and fourth REITs to receive SEBI approval for an IPO.

Dhaval Buch is currently a senior advisor at Blackstone and at Alvarez & Marsal, and also serves as a non-executive director on the Board of Gildan and is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D), where he graduated in mechanical engineering in 1984. His salary isn’t known though.

Why Dhaval is dragged into controversy?

US-based short-seller Hindenburg Research has accused Madhabi Puri Buch, the chairperson of India’s market regulator SEBI, and her husband, Dhaval Buch, of holding stakes in an offshore fund with significant investments from Vinod Adani, brother of Gautam Adani. The report suggests that this fund was part of a network used by Vinod Adani for money siphoning. Hindenburg has raised concerns about SEBI’s impartiality due to these potential conflicts of interest.

According to the report, on March 22, 2017, just before Madhabi Puri Buch was appointed SEBI chairperson, Dhaval Buch emailed Mauritius fund administrator Trident Trust about their investments in the Global Dynamic Opportunities Fund (GDOF). In this email, he requested to be the sole person authorized to operate the accounts, seemingly moving the assets out of his wife’s name ahead of her politically sensitive appointment.
