On Sunday, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) made history by electing its first Dalit president in 30 years, Dhananjay, hailing from the left-supported factions, marking a significant shift after nearly three decades.

After a four-year break, Dhananjay of the All India Students’ Association (AISA) emerged victorious in the polls, winning the JNUSU presidency with a commanding 2,598 votes. This was a significant victory over Umesh C. Ajmeera of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the RSS, who had previously secured 1,676 votes, winning all four positions.
The election, held on Friday, saw participation in determining the president, vice president, general secretary, and joint secretary roles.
However, the triumph of the Left and Dhananjay’s ascendancy to the presidency have ignited widespread discourse around his viral speeches, in which he was seen advocating the release of Umar Khalid and other anti-India elements.
The video has gone viral on social media, with netizens trolling him for having radical ideas. Many also asked for his arrest and the scrapping of the JNUSU elections.

Who is Dhananjay?
Dhananjay is an Indian communist student leader. He has been in the news because he became the first Dalit president of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU).
He was born and raised in Gaya, Bihar. His father worked as a policeman and he has 5 older siblings in his family.
Presently, Dhananjay is pursuing a PhD from the School of Arts in Aesthetics at Jawaharlal Nehru University. He is a Dalit Hindu.
He has been associated with left activism since an early age. According to him, his father faced caste discrimination multiple times during duty. This inspired him to join student politics. Ever since he came to Jawahar Lal Nehru University, he has been associated with the All India Students’ Association (AISA), a renowned left-wing student organization.
Most recently, he won the post of president in JNUSU elections, which were held after 4 years old break.
Dhananjay is the first Dalit president of JNUSU from the Left after Batti Lal Bairwa, who was elected in 1996-97.
