Devin Jaramillo killed in Kendall traffic stop shooting
Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Deputy Devin Jaramillo was a 27-year-old police officer of the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office who was recently shot and killed on Friday afternoon. The tragic incident took place when Devin was responding to a routine traffic stop near Southwest 128th Street. In response to the attack, Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz called the attack “brutal” and “unacceptable” and stated how the department lost one of its most dedicated officers. She added: “He’s not only a deputy—he’s a son, a brother, and a friend.”
Authorities have identified 21-year-old Steven David Rustrian as the shooter who killed Deputy Jaramillo on Friday afternoon. The confrontation took place near the 12200 block of Southwest 128th Street after Jaramillo responded to a traffic crash. According to investigators, Rustrian was involved in a minor accident near an Enterprise Rent-A-Car. However, he tried to avoid responsibility by driving off and parking nearby before allegedly switching seats with his boyfriend prior to the officers’ arrival. He was attempting to conceal that he was the driver, but witnesses alerted the deputy about the switch just moments before the deadly encounter took place.
Tributes and condolences
Following the news of his tragic death, condolences and tributes have been pouring in from across South Florida. Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne A. Jones stated:
Regardless of the color of our uniforms, there are no boundaries when one of our own has fallen.”
Miami Mayor Daniella Levine Cava described Devin’s death as “a devastating loss.”
Sheriff Cordero-Stutz also posted on Facebook:
At just 27 years old, he served our community with professionalism, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others.”

He grew up surrounded by a strong sense of duty and service, with his father being a retired Miami-Dade Police detective. Devin’s close ones remembered him as a disciplined, goal-driven, and deeply respectful person.

Devin Jaramillo started out his career in law enforcement with the Coral Gables Police Department, following inspiration from his father, who was a retired Miami-Dade Police detective. His dedication quickly stood out after earning Officer of the Month honors in July 2023 for cracking a string of package theft cases. After joining the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, Devin earned commendation for a traffic stop that led to the seizure of 13 firearms and ammunition.
