In tests like JEE, NEET, and UPSC, a lot of students from Hindi-medium backgrounds frequently struggle with language. But West Bengal’s Devdutta Majhi has shown otherwise. Despite attending a Bengali-medium school, the young student from Katwa, West Bengal, has topped the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced 2025.

Devdutta Majhi participated in both sessions of the JEE Main 2025 exam and performed exceptionally well. In the January JEE Main session, she received an All India Rank (AIR) of 15. She later attracted a lot of attention by passing the second JEE Main session with a perfect score of 300 out of 300.
Talking about her preparation journey, Devdutta said, “I never used mobile for entertainment or relaxation. I just focused on my studies. I focused on the theory part followed by problems. This combination for each topic helps to make the concept strong. It is true for each subject. I found chemistry to be difficult and challenging at times.”
Age 18 Devdutta, who was born in the West Bengali village of Jambad in the Adasha block of the Purulia district, has always excelled academically, even in her school days. She went to Katwa’s Durgadasi Choudhary Girls High School and secured the first rank in the Madhyamik class 10 exam of 2023 with an outstanding score of 697 out of 700, or 99.57 percent. In the class 12 HS exams, she likewise received a rank of 6.
Devdutta was a student of West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and continued her studies in West Bengal Council for Higher Secondary education and is also a scholar of the State-conducted Vidyasagar Science Olympiad and secured top rank in the said Olympiad in 2022.
Devdutta wants to attend IISC Bangalore to pursue a B.Tech. She had previously earned a spot in the Indian National Physics Olympiad (INPhO).

Her mother, Seli Devi, is a teacher at Durgadasi Choudhrani Girls High School in Katwa, while her father, Jayant Majhi, is a professor of physics at BB College in Asansol. She attended a school in Jambad where she completed class five. The family relocated to Katwa after her parents’ employment moves.
Her mother, a high school physics teacher, and her father, a college professor, helped build a calm, focused environment for her. She attended LIVE online classes from FIITJEE eSchool, connecting with teachers based in Delhi and the flexibility of online learning worked in her favour.
Her FIITJEE mentors offered subject-wise tips, helped convert weaknesses into strengths, and provided full sets of study material, national-level mock tests, and exam strategies.
The All India Rank (AIR) 1 has been attained by Rajit Gupta. The pan-India entrance exam, which opens admission to the esteemed Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), is thought to have drawn over 1.8 lakh applicants. Along with the results, IIT Kanpur also revealed the names of the top-ranked applicants in what is regarded as one of the nation’s most difficult tests.
