For the second-degree murder of Tyre Nichols, former Memphis police officer Desmond Mills Jr was arrested and detained; he was later freed on a $250,000 bail
After a heated debate, the victim, a 29-year-old man, was allegedly brutally attacked by the ex-officer Desmond Mills Jr and four other police officers Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, and Justin Smith who had stopped him for a traffic violation.
According to his official police file, he was a member of the department’s Scorpion team. Scorpion is an acronym for Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace In Our Neighborhood (SCORPION). Forty cops work together to reduce street violence in a certain area. On October 21, the Memphis outpost of the specialised squad began operating.

Desmond Mills Jr. is one of five ex-Memphis cops facing second-degree murder charges for the 2014 slaying of Tyre Nichols. He has lived in Hartford, Bloomfield, Charleston, and Bangor, among other locations, and has worked as a jailer in Tennessee and Mississippi.

The ex-cop played football for West Virginia State University from 2011 to 2014. In March of 2017, Mills Jr. became a member of the Memphis Police Department’s elite Scorpion team. At a traffic check on January 7, Desmond Mills Jr. and four other policemen, Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, and Justin Smith, allegedly attacked Nichols, a FedEx driver.

The victim, a 29-year-old man, was savagely beaten and died from his injuries on Tuesday, January 10. Second-degree murder, official oppression, aggravated kidnapping while armed, aggravated assault while acting in concert, official misconduct through unauthorised exercise of official power, two counts of aggravated kidnapping causing bodily injury, and two counts of official misconduct through failure to perform a duty imposed by law are all charges against Mills Jr. He was apprehended by Shelby County law enforcement on January 26 and is currently free on a $250,000 bond.
