Derek Miller, Molly Miller’s husband, has supported her throughout her career

Molly Miller is departing to take a position as coach at Arizona State after leading the Grand Canyon’s women’s basketball team to its first March Madness this season.

Molly Miller and ASU both verified the hiring on Saturday. In order to create a winning culture and help the team win its first conference title this season, Miller spent the last five years at GCU, where she took over a program that had gone 15-12 a year prior to her arrival and 7-20 two years prior to moving to Phoenix.

Arizona State women’s basketball confirmed the hire with a post on its X account Saturday, saying: “Sun Devil Nation, join us in welcoming Molly Miller as our new head coach!”

Derek Miller has supported Molly her through it all behind the scenes with the two getting married on 1 September, 2012. Derek hails from Bowling Green, Ohio. He has experience in football operations and recruiting. The former Bowling Green football player and the ASU coach are parents to a daughter named Crosby and a son named Cy. The pair was frequently spotted at GCU drills.

Derek has built a solid career in football recruiting and operations. He played college football at Bowling Green State University, where he was part of the 2013 Mid-American Conference championship team and after graduating in 2014 with a degree in sports management and a minor in psychology, he transitioned into football operations.

Derek began his career as a personnel assistant at Bowling Green from 2012 to 2014 and then joined LSU as a personnel assistant from 2014 to 2016 before being promoted to assistant director of player personnel in 2017. He also worked at USC as an assistant personnel director from 2016 to 2017, where he helped coordinate a thrilling 52-49 Rose Bowl win over Penn State and returned to LSU in 2017 before heading back to Bowling Green as the director of player personnel in 2020 and then general manager in 2020–2021.

Derek moved to East Carolina in 2021 as the director of player personnel and recruiting, where he handled prospect visits, on-campus evaluations, walk-on tryouts, and creative media and in 2022, he joined Duke as the recruiting general manager under head coach Mike Elko. At Duke, Derek oversaw recruiting strategy and helped the Blue Devils secure a Military Bowl win and in 2024 he moved to Texas A&M, where he now serves as the recruiting general manager.

Molly ad joked that the couple was running a man-to-man defence with the birth of their second child.

Molly and Derek’s story began in college at different schools as Molly was making her mark in basketball at Drury University. Derek was focused on football at Bowling Green State University. They crossed paths through mutual friends and connected over their shared love of sports and while Molly transitioned into coaching after college. Derek shifted toward football operations. Although Derek’s DOB isn’t known, he is aged between 30-40 years while his wife Molly who has a net worth of $1 million is aged 38.

Arizona State University’s new head women’s basketball coach is Molly Miller. From 2020 until 2025, she served as Grand Canyon University’s head coach. Miller played collegiate basketball and served as head coach at Drury University, a division II institution in Springfield, Missouri, her alma mater.

Miller played basketball for four years at Springfield, Missouri’s Kickapoo High School, where she won two state titles.

She went on to play four years of collegiate basketball for Drury University, where she holds the second-highest scoring (1,570 points), assist (439), and steal (407) records in the school’s history. She was admitted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2012.
