Demetrius Haley, who stands at a towering 6 feet and 1 inch, lives in a place called Cordova, in Tennessee. According to the Conan Daily, on May 16, 2015, Haley and fellow Shelby County Division of Corrections officer David Dyson beat inmate Cordarlrius Sledge at the penitentiary farm until Sledge passed out while under Danny McClain’s watchful eye.

A man filed a complaint in 2016 alleging that Demetrius Haley had participated in the beating of an inmate nearly eight years prior. Cordarlrius Sledge was assaulted by two corrections officers in 2015 while he was serving a three-year term for aggravated assault. Sledge was found in possession of a smartphone, which was against the rules.

When officers, including Haley, began hitting Sledge, he fled off to destroy his phone in his underwear. The case that Sledge brought against Judge Thomas Anderson, Dyson, and McClain was dismissed on March 2, 2018.

Memphis Police Chief C.J. Davis said the officers violated department standards during the stop that led to Nichols’ murder on January 7. As a result, Officers Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills, and Justin Smith were terminated. The available camera footage from the Tennessee traffic stop revealed “no proof” of the dangerous driving he was accused of.

Memphis police officers are charged under multiple counts

The five ex-police officers faced charges of second-degree murder, two counts of official misconduct, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, one act of official oppression, and one action of aggravated assault. Mills and Smith, two of the arrested officers, were released Thursday night after posting $250,000 bonds each. Records show that as of Thursday night, Haley, Martin, and Bean were still being held in custody. In fact, as of early Friday morning, only Haley was listed as being in custody.

Haley was one of two police that entered Sledge, cellblock on May 16, 2015. Under the observation of a third officer. The claim was dismissed before its merits could be reviewed. “When they came in to do one of their little random pop-in searches, they called me and two other guys to the shower area to be strip-searched,” Sledge explained. “They requested for me to be searched first.”
