Afghanistan all-rounder Gulbadin Naib has been signed by the Delhi Capitals to take place for the injured Mitchell Marsh for the rest of the Indian Premier League season.

This is going to be the Afghan player’s maiden time in the league after Marsh was ruled out following hamstring injury.

Who is Gulbadin Naib?

Gulbadin Naib is a cricket player from Afghanistan who was born on March 16, 1991 in Puli Alam, Logar, Afghanistan. The 33-year-old stands 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m) tall.

A look at Gulbadin Naib’s career so far

Naib has played in 82 ODIs and 65 T20 Internationals for Afghanistan so far. Before the 2019 Cricket World Cup, in April 2019, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) named Naib as the team’s new One Day International (ODI) captain, replacing Asghar Afghan.

But after Afghanistan lost every match at the World Cup, Rashid Khan was named the new captain of the national cricket team in all three formats. The Afghan played five matches for Afghanistan in the 2008 World Cricket League Division Five before making his debut against Japan.

Naib made his List A debut for Afghanistan as part of the first squad to leave for Pakistan after the 2009 attack on the Sri Lankan national cricket team. Between Pakistan A and Naib, two of the three unofficial One Day Internationals (ODIs) were played.

Talking about his international career, in his debut One Day International encounter, the right handed batsman and the right arm medium fast bowler took on Canada in the 2011–13 ICC Intercontinental Cup One-Day.

Later on in the trip, against Trinidad and Tobago, he went on to make his Twenty20 debut at the Cricket Canada Summer Festival. He participated in that competition as well, against Canada.

In April 2019, he was selected as the captain of the Afghanistan cricket team competing in the 2019 Cricket World Cup. He has played for teams like (2011/12) Afghan Cheetahs, (2017) Boost Defenders, (2018–present) Balkh Legends, (2019) Sylhet Strikers.

Naib has also represented Afghanistan at 2010 Guangzhou winning silver then 2014 Incheon where he against grabbed a silver medal and then silver again at the 2022 Hangzhou.
