Who was David Kozak?
David Kozak was a citizen of the Czech Republic. He has been in the news because he initially executed the mass shooting on the Prague University campus that left 14 dead.
He was a 24-year-old student at Prague’s Charles University, studying Polish history. Chief of Prague Police Martin Vondrasek described Kozak as an “excellent student” with no criminal history, but the top official withheld much more information, leaving a large portion of the shooter’s past unknown.
He graduated in European history, and continued his masterโs studies in which he focused on Polish history and even received the award of the Polish Institute in Prague for the work โProblems of the Antagonism of the Galician Peasant and Krakow Uprising of 1846โ.
However, he was considered an introverted student and suffered from mental problems, with perverted thoughts running through his head and in a chilling post, the 24-year-old student wrote, “I want to do school shooting and possibly suicide” and “I always wanted to kill. I thought I would become a maniac in the future”.
In the Telegram account, written in Russian, he appears to eulogise 14-year-old Alina Afanaskina who took her own life after killing a classmate and wounding five others.
Kozakโs father – his first shooting victim – was named Stanislaw which might suggest a Russian family connection. Kozak was a Christian by religion.
Even though David Kozak’s injuries were characterized as “devastating,” it was unclear what exactly happened to cause his death. Vondrasek expressed doubt about whether Kozak committed suicide or whether he was shot by law enforcement amid a potential confrontation. Interestingly, officials ruled out the likelihood that the attacker had an accomplice.
In addition to carrying a sizable arsenal and plenty of ammunition during the assault, Kozak was a lawful owner of numerous guns, which suggested that the “horrible act” was well-planned and intended to cause great harm.
