On December 23, 26-year-old Swiss snowboarder Sophie Hediger perished in an avalanche in Arosa, Switzerland. She is survived by her partner Dario Wuthrich.

On December 14, Sophie Hediger had recently celebrated her 26th birthday. Sophie was a snowboardcross rising star who just placed second in St. Moritz in January 2024 and finished on the podium twice at the World Cup. She also represented Switzerland in the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022.

According to the LinkedIn profile of age 25 Swiss ice hockey player Dario Wuthrich who weighs 92kg, he graduated from the Kaugmann EFX, Wirtschaft & Gesellschaft in 2019. Before relocating to the Hockey Club Ambrì Piotta in May 2023 with him on contract with the team till 2027/28, he played professional hockey with EVZ.

After Sophie’s passing, “The Hockey Club Ambri Piotta joins the grief of defenseman Dario Wüthrich for the sudden and tragic death of his beloved partner Sophie. To Sophie’s family and Dario, sincere condolences and a big hug from the whole white and blue family,” Ambri Piotta said in a statement.

Without revealing much about their relationship, Sophie Hediger posted about her partner on Instagram and credited him for making her happy. In one of their oldest post together, the snowboarder wrote, “You make me smile.”

Wüthrich comes from a sports background and is a professional ice hockey player and over the years, Hediger’s partner has represented Switzerland on the international stage and also played for the EHC Wettingen-Baden youth team.

Sophie Hediger career

Sophie Hediger who was born in 1998, participated in the mixed team snowboard cross and women’s snowboard cross at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. In 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, she also competed in the FIS Snowboard World Cup for four years in a row.

Hediger made her World Cup debut during the 2019–20 campaign. In the 2023–24 snowboard cross season, she was placed on the podium for the first time. In a snowboard cross, four to six competitors compete across a course that usually grows narrow and may have a variety of jumps, drops, and spins.

After roughly 60 to 90 seconds, the half-kilometre race comes to an end. In her native Switzerland, Olympian snowboarder Sophie Hediger lost her life Monday in an avalanche.

The winter sports union Swiss-Ski said that Hediger, 26, was caught in an avalanche while “freeriding,” or snowboarding on natural terrain, in Arosa, a town and resort in eastern Switzerland.

“We are shocked, and our thoughts are with Sophie’s family, to whom we offer our deepest condolences,” said Swiss-Ski CEO Walter Reusser in a statement.
