Tennis icon Serena Williams recently made a short surprise appearance at Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX halftime show performance. Serena came in during Kendrick’s performance of ‘Not Like Us’ and executed the ‘Crip Walk’, which is a dance that has its origins in the Compton-based Crips gang.

The incident sparked all kinds of controversies, mainly since her half-sister, Yetunde Price, was tragically killed by a Crips member. Several critics were of the opinion that Serena’s performance could be seen as glamorizing street gang culture. especially considering Williams’ personal history. However, many netizens have come out in support, stating how her dance is a tribute to her roots in Compton.

Yetunde Price murder

Back in 2003, Robert Maxfield, a Southside Crips member, murdered Yetunde Price after shooting her in the back of the head. Maxfield allegedly fired his AK-47 at Yetunde Price’s parked SUV around East Greenleaf Boulevard, near a suspected drug house.

It took place just a mile from the playground where her two sisters, Venus and Serena Williams, first learned tennis. According to prosecutors, Maxfield carried out the attack in retaliation against Price’s boyfriend. He mistakenly believed that Price’s boyfriend, Rolland Wormley, was affiliated with a rival gang. The tragic incident took place on the night of September 14, 2003, and left Yetunde dead, while her boyfriend Wormley, who was the intended target, survived without any injuries.

Robert Maxfield bio

Robert Maxfield is a known member of the Southside Crips gang, who infamously murdered Yetunde Price, the half-sister of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams when he was aged 25. Following the incident, Maxfield was arrested and charged with murder. He eventually pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter back in 2006 and received a 15-year sentence in prison. However, after serving 12 years, he went free on parole in 2018.

Yetunde Hawanya Tar Price was the eldest half-sister of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams and their personal assistant. She also worked as a registered nurse besides owning a beauty salon. Yetunde was born to Oracene Price and Yusef Rasheed and grew up alongside her sisters Lyndrea and Isha. Her mother later married her stepfather, Richard Williams, and had Venus and Serena.

Yetunde was renowned for being intelligent and graduated as the valedictorian of her high school class. During the time of her death, she was a mother of three children. She was first married to Jeffrey Johnson, but left her and later married Byron Bobbitt. However, she divorced him due to domestic abuse. Following her death, Venus and Serena established the Yetunde Price Resource Center to help people affected by violence and trauma.
