Mukesh is one of the few cricketers in recent years to make the Indian white-ball team without an IPL contract. In the last couple of years, the 28-year-old has been a consistent performer for Bengal. His bowling for India ‘A’ and, most recently, for Rest of India in the Irani Cup have made people take notice.

Mukesh was born in the Gopalganj district of Bihar. His father was a migrant taxi driver, and Mukesh moved to Kolkata in the early 2000s because his father wanted him to work for the government. He now works at the office of the Comptroller and Auditor General, so his father’s wish has been granted.

In 18 List-A matches so far, Mukesh has taken 17 wickets at an average of 44.00 and economy rate of 5.17 and the 29 year old fast bowler has 19 wickets in 17 T20 matches at an economy rate of 7.25.

Coming to his numbers in red-ball cricket, the youngster has 113 wickets in just 31 matches at an average of 22.50 and has  scalped nine wickets in three unofficial four-day matches against New Zealand-A. He was also Bengal’s joint-highest wicket-taker in the 2021-22 Ranji Trophy season with 20 wickets in nine innings.

He is yet to make his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut and went unsold in IPL 2022 auction, having kept his base price Rs. 20 lakh. At a height of 175cm, he is known for bowling consistently in the 130-140kmph zone.

He started out with tennis-ball cricket, which is a type of cricket. In his early 20s, the pacer switched his attention to the leather ball and played for several clubs in the State. However, it was the ambitious “Vision 2020” project of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) that changed the course of his life.

Ranadeb Bose, a support staff member for Bengal, noticed the young cricket player. He told Waqar Younis, a former Pakistan international, about the young player. As a bowling consultant, Waqar was in charge of the bowling trails.

Even though the great Pakistani bowler was not happy with Mukesh’s skills, Ranadeb convinced Waqar to put him on the Vision 2020 team, which turned out to be a brilliant move.

Mukesh Kumar’s Health Concerns And Making Accommodations

Mukesh was born into a poor family and was malnourished. When he joined the Bengal set-up in 2014, doctors told him he was anaemic.

The intensity of red-ball cricket was too much for the young player to handle, so CAB took him in and helped him with his housing and health needs right away. It took almost three years for the State association to train and shape him into a professional.

Again, his play caught Ranadeb’s eye, and he persuaded Sairaj Bahutule, the head coach of Bengal at the time, to put him on the senior team. Even though Bahutule had doubts, Mukesh was put on the Bengal Ranji Trophy team for the 2015 season.

No Looking Back For Mukesh Kumar

In his first first-class match, Mukesh played against Haryana in Rohtak. In the first innings, he took four wickets, including the prized wicket of Virender Sehwag. This showed how good he could be.
