Redfern’s appointment promotes the development of local female umpires who train alongside seasoned experts, all while ensuring impartiality. With this, the momentum from the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup’s record all-female match officials panel is expanded.
Who is Sue Redfern?
English cricket umpire and former player Suzanne Redfern MBE was born on October 26, 1977 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England. Nothing is known about her marital status.
Between 1995 and 1999, she participated in the 1997 World Cup as a player for the England women’s squad. Redfern, a Mansfield, Nottinghamshire native, started her county career with East Midlands in 1992. She later moved to Derbyshire and Staffordshire in 1997 and 2003 before retiring following the 2008 season.
When she played European Championship matches against the Netherlands, Denmark, and Ireland in July 1995, at the age of 17, her international career got underway. Later in the year, she made her Test debut against India.
Redfern took three wickets in four of her team’s seven matches during the 1997 World Cup in India, when she played only four games. At the age of 21, she participated in one Test and one ODI against India in July 1999, marking her final appearances for England.
Redfern began officiating cricket after retiring from the game, initially serving exclusively in regional events. Since 2016, she has served as an umpire on the ICC Development Panel. In addition to three ICC Women’s T20 World Cups (2018, 2022, and 2024), she has officiated in two ICC Women’s Cricket World Cups (2017 and 2022).
