The Anniston Star reported that Oliver was involved in a tragic accident in the Golden Springs Area in Piedmont on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, resulting in his untimely demise.

Friends and followers have expressed their condolences on social media for the 27-year-old athlete. The collision occurred when Branson Oliver’s vehicle collided with an 18-wheeler truck at the 900 block of Golden Springs Road on Tuesday.

Calhoun County’s Coroner, Patrick Brown, stated that Oliver was ejected from his vehicle and was pronounced dead at the crash site after midnight. At the time of writing, it remained unclear whether the truck driver sustained any injuries in the accident.

Tributes Poured In

In a heartfelt tribute on Facebook, Luke Ferguson, a close friend of Oliver, shared memories of their strong bond over the past four or five years.

Ferguson highlighted their transition from partners to close friends, emphasizing that their daily conversations went beyond cornhole, covering a wide range of topics.

He described Branson as his best friend, akin to a brother, someone he could reach out to anytime for support and laughter. Ferguson thanked Oliver for inspiring him to take up cornhole and shared a collection of Oliver’s images on the social networking site.

Who was Branson Oliver?

The Anniston Star reported that Branson Oliver was a graduate of Jacksonville State University, specializing in occupational safety and health. He subsequently worked at Honda Manufacturing.

Oliver’s passion for cornhole was well-known, and he credited his friend and parents for introducing him to the game during high school. Apart from cornhole, he also played baseball, according to the Anniston Memorial Funeral Home.

Branson Oliver’s achievements included winning the Player of the Year in 2016, raising over $65,000 for charitable causes through cornhole, and securing victories in various tournaments, such as the State Double Cornhole Championship and the National Collegiate Double Cornhole Championship.

He even appeared on ESPN and teamed up with Dustin Travis to win the American Cornhole League national college doubles championship.

The news of Oliver’s passing deeply saddened many, prompting an outpouring of condolences on social media. Friends and well-wishers expressed their grief, with some describing Branson as a “great guy” and offering prayers for his family.

A service to honor Branson Oliver will take place on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 1 pm at the First Baptist Church of White Plains, according to the Anniston Memorial Funeral Home.
